One of the cd collections that brings back romantic times of your youth. Or at a dance or house party slow dancing with your date. One of my enduring memories was of the musical legend listening to his music as if hearing if for the first time. Quiet Storm was listened to on a 8 track recorder in a vehicle while you kissed and made out with your boyfriend. Stream songs including Quiet Storm, The Agony and the Ecstasy and more. From Pure Smokey we get The Love Between Me And My Kids. Listen to A Quiet Storm by Smokey Robinson on Apple Music. A clear statement of where he’s coming from. Smokey sports an immaculate natural on both covers. The seventies were also a time of heightened consciousness. If there is a golden age of R&B/Soul Music, this is it. One of the most highly acclaimed Soul albums of the 1970s, this landmark album spawned 3 hit singles including his first disco hit “Baby That’s Backatcha” that went to number 7 on the Billboard Disco chart and this album re-established Smokey’s reputation as a master songwriter and producer and solidified his solo success after leaving his legendary group, The Miracles.Īs an aside, Smokey was the first guest on an afternoon show I produced, “Live With Doug and Lorna” on WHUR. Two albums in succession: Pure Smokey (1974) and A Quiet Storm (1975). Much like Gaye’s album, the influence of Smokey’s album, The Quiet Storm would be felt one year later when WHUR created a late night program of the same name and three decades later over 400 stations have copied the format making it one of the most popular and longest running in radio history. Inspired by Gaye’s vision and work, Smokey sought to use the formula for a suite of love songs separated by a soft blowing wind.

Several years earlier, Smokey’s friend and labelmate, Marvin Gaye had created a suite of songs talking about the Vietnam War and the environment making “What’s Going On” a musical phenomenon.

Vince Aletti ranked it as the year’s third best album in his ballot for the 1975 Pazz & Jop critics poll.Close to 35 years ago, Smokey Robinson left an lasting love footprint in R&B music and caused the birth of scores of children when he released “The Agony and the Ecstasy.” The album is, however, uneven, as Side One (with the great title track, the swoon-worthy 'The Agony and the Ecstasy,' and possibly Smokey Robinson's greatest solo song. In a contemporary review for Rolling Stone, Robert Palmer said A Quiet Storm proved Robinson was “still a dynamic creative force” as it succeeded on the strength of his singing and production, although he highlighted the “sexy directness” of the title track and “Baby That’s Backatcha”. A Quiet Storm is a 'concept album' insofar as many of the tracks are linked together by a two-note Moog motif throughout. It spawned 3 hit singles, including his first disco hit ,”Baby That’s Backatcha” that went to number 7 on the Billboard Disco chart (Top 10 R&B), and this album re-established Robinson’s reputation as a master songwriter and producer and solidified his solo success after leaving his legendary group, The Miracles. This landmark album spawned and lent its name to the “Quiet Storm” musical programming format, a format still adopted by radio stations across America more than 40 years later. A longtime innovator at Motown, Robinson responded to the Funk revolution in black music (Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Al Green) with an effective counterpoint: the stylish and mature album, “A Quiet Storm”.
